The Legacy of Harriet Blye and Passover 2024

Updated: Apr 29

Harriet Blye Unlocks Hearts

Betsey's journey with Harriet Blye began seventeen years ago. On weekends, Harriet became Betsey's private client as her weekend Activity Director. Their shared passion for teaching forged a bond that transcended their religious differences—Harriet, a devout Jew, and Betsey, a Gentile.

Harriet taught Betsey about Passover, one of her most special Jewish holidays. Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is one of the most religious holidays in Judaism. It commemorates the Biblical story of Exodus, where God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Together, we celebrated Passover in her home in 2007.

Harriet's legacy as a Los Angeles Unified Schoolteacher is one of unwavering dedication. At Arminta Street Elementary School in North Hollywood, she was affectionately known as 'Mrs. Art.' Captivated by her teaching, her students would sit a full hour on the rug, their attention unwavering.

She graduated from UCLA and loved her elementary students. After retirement, she suffered a stroke and was in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Staying in her home until she passed away, she had a CNA come during the week to tend to her as a live-in caregiver. Harriet lived 82 years, from September 14, 1933, to August 30, 2015.

Betsey, founder of Callicare For Life, was a nurturing presence in Harriet's life, bringing boundless joy. Spending weekends together was always an adventure, filled with encouragement exploring beyond the familiar confines of home. Betsey fondly reminisced, "We attended concerts, explored Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara, enjoyed movies, luncheons, and even attended Bar Mitzvahs together." Harriet's family had deep connections. Her uncle was a founder of Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, and another relative was a Hollywood director. Despite their diverse backgrounds, Harriet and Betsey formed a strong bond. One day, Harriet expressed to Betsey, "You are the wind beneath my wings." These shared moments have become cherished memories for life. As Passover approaches on April 22, 2024, may blessings abound for all, and may God's grace be upon you.

Blye's goal was to unlock the talent and appreciation for art within all students. "The lesson is there is an artist inside each of us.”
