Dad Developed Dementia

When our Dad developed Alzheimer's disease the last four years of his stellar life, we were stunned! Plaque on his brain. Not his fault. No cures yet. A Battalion Surgeon, US Army, in the Battle of the Bulge, World War II, buried now in Arlington. A New Yorker, Alaska, Africa, California Medical Doctor. A family devastated. A decision made to place Dad in a facility, lock down, memory care. "A Cruise Ship on Land." And, yet, what did Dad need today? What did Grandpa need? What did Great Grandpa need? Calm. Security in our love. In our unconditional love. A hug. Listening ear. Follow him. Let him lead the conversation. Let him lead the walks to the Yacht club where he remembers somehow that he used to own a sailboat and loved to race. Holy Communion at his family church home on Easter. Easter Lilies. Fragrant, familiar scents and sights. Joy. A smile. Dad's Day with us at home. Not wanting to leave us, but returning to his new home now, and it's all ok. We'll be back soon, and he trusts our words and our love.
